Gather tinder and kindling before striking the rod
Use the toothed edge to shave dry wood into fine curls
Draw the striker along the rod with firm, steady pressure
Angle sparks directly into the centre of the tinder nest
Wipe the rod and striker dry after damp weather
Store in a dry pocket or pack with the lanyard attached
