Cold-Weather Hydration: Keeping Water Liquid and Safe
Cold weather breaks hydration in three separate places at once, and most people only plan for one of them. You drink less than you should, the water you carried turns solid, and the method you use to treat more of it quietly stops being reliable. Solving only the freezing part still leaves you short.

01Why Hydration Slips in the Cold
In summer you drink because you want to. The prompt is obvious, the water is cold and pleasant, and the bottle is right there. In autumn and winter every one of those conditions reverses. You do not particularly want cold water, the bottle is buried under a layer, and stopping to dig it out means taking gloves off in the wind.
The result is that people simply drink less, without ever deciding to. Thirst is not a good prompt in the cold, so replace it with something that does not depend on how you feel. Drink a set amount before you set off, at every break whether you want it or not, and again with dinner. A fixed habit beats a good intention every time.

02Keeping Water Liquid
Water does not freeze evenly. It freezes at the thinnest, most exposed, smallest-volume part of your system first, which is why a bottle can still be mostly liquid while being completely unusable. Knowing which part goes first tells you exactly where to spend your attention.

Overnight, the same logic applies to where things sit. A bottle on the tent floor is against the coldest surface available. A bottle inside a stuff sack near your sleeping bag is not. An insulated bottle or vacuum flask remains the single most effective piece of kit for this problem, and if you camp regularly below freezing it is worth owning before almost anything else.
03Bottle or Bladder, Honestly
A hydration reservoir is genuinely better for drinking often, which is exactly what cold weather requires, and worse at surviving the conditions that make drinking often necessary. Both of those are true at the same time and it is worth being straight about it.
The advantage is real. A hose on your shoulder means you sip without stopping, without removing gloves and without opening your pack, and that is precisely the friction that causes people to under-drink in the cold. The weakness is the hose. It holds a few millilitres in a thin tube in open air, and once that plug of ice forms, the three litres behind it are irrelevant. Blowing the water back after each drink is the whole technique, and it works, but it has to become automatic rather than something you remember at the third break.

The honest answer for hard frost is to carry both. Run the bladder while you are moving and the hose is being used every few minutes, and keep a filled bottle in the pack as the supply that cannot be blocked by a single centimetre of ice. 04When Your Treatment Method Stops Working
This is the part that gets skipped, and it is the only part with a health consequence. Cold water is not clean water. The CDC is explicit that clear water can still contain germs and that drinking straight from a clear mountain stream is generally not safe, which holds just as true in October as in July.
Meanwhile the equipment you rely on becomes less trustworthy. Filter elements can be damaged by freezing, and the problem is that there is no way to look at a filter and tell whether it is still doing its job. Battery-powered treatment devices also lose output in the cold. Chemical tablets do not freeze, but they work more slowly in very cold water, so the stated contact time is a minimum rather than a target.
The method that does not fail
Boiling is the fallback, and the CDC describes it as the best way to kill germs in water: bring clear water to a rolling boil for one minute, and for three minutes at elevations above roughly 2,000 metres. It is unaffected by frost, needs no batteries and cannot be quietly compromised. Critical Safety
If you filter rather than boil, keep the filter next to your body during the day and inside your sleeping bag at night, and never leave it out in frost. If it has frozen, treat it as no longer reliable rather than hoping, because a compromised element gives no warning. 05Warm Drinks as Equipment, Not Luxury
Hot drinks do two jobs on a cold trip. They get fluid into people who would otherwise skip it, because a warm mug is appealing in a way that a cold bottle is not, and they contribute to warming someone who has got chilled. One caution worth stating plainly. Health Canada notes that alcohol increases blood flow to the extremities, so it can leave you feeling warm while you are actually losing heat. 06A Water Plan for a Cold Weekend

- Carry a stove and fuel you have already run in the cold
- Fill every bottle to the top before dark
- Store bottles upside down and off the tent floor overnight
- Set drinking times instead of waiting to feel thirsty
- Keep any filter against your body and never let it freeze
Add one more if you are camping in a serviced campground late in the season: confirm before you leave whether the taps will still be running. Water lines are drained ahead of the first hard freeze, and a campground that is open is not necessarily a campground with water.

Do I really need to drink as much in cold weather?
Yes. You continue to lose fluid through breathing and through sweat underneath layers, and neither is as noticeable as sweating in summer. The difference is that you will not feel prompted to drink, which is why a schedule works better than waiting for thirst.
Can I just eat snow instead of carrying water?
It is a poor trade. Melting snow in your mouth costs body heat at exactly the moment you are trying to conserve it, and snow is untreated water like any other source. Melt it on a stove and treat it, and it becomes a genuinely useful supply.
Is my water filter still safe to use after it has frozen?
Treat it as unreliable. Freezing can damage a filter element in ways that leave no visible sign and cannot be tested in the field. Keep the filter warm against your body, and carry a fallback that freezing cannot affect, which in practice means the ability to boil.
