How to Choose Your Tent

How to choose your tent

Three questions decide almost every tent purchase: how many seasons, how much weight, and how many people.

1. Which season rating?

3-season shelters cover spring through autumn in most climates — the right choice for the majority of trips. Choose 4-season only for winter, alpine, or exposed high-wind conditions. Most hikers need 3-season.

2. How much weight can you carry?

If you're covering distance or going solo, ultralight (under 1.5kg) is worth the premium. For basecamp or shorter trips, standard weight buys more space and durability for less. Distance & solo → ultralight. Basecamp → standard.

3. How many people — really?

Rated capacity is snug. If you want room for gear inside, or you're tall, size up one person. Want gear space? Size up one.
